The literacy rate in Germany is 99%. Although, Germany University of Hamburg found that approximately 7.5 million or 14 % of the work force German are suffering from illiteracy as of 2011. The United States literacy rate is also 99%. The total general government expenditure on education as of 2011 is 5.1% of the total GDP. The U.S education expenditure is 5.6% as of 2012. Both countries use a similar amount of their GDP on education. Many economists argue that human capital is one of the keys to economic growth of a country. There is a possible correlation between the fact that both Germany and the U.S have similar education expenditures and literacy rates and both countries have some of the world’s largest economies.
